I recently returned from a trip to Australia. We were there visiting both the country and relatives. Since I wasn’t sure when I would have the opportunity to return there again, we decided to spend 3 weeks. I’ve traveled extensively, so I made what I felt to be [...]

Doing things differently this time
by Emily Blakeney
I’m a young mom, I was 22 when I had my daughter, Eden. While I came from a family with high values placed on health and safety, I felt I was still too young to take on some of the choices that I believe now, at 27, I’ll be able to do with [...]

5 Ways to Care for Yourself During Pregnancy
One thing of the things I did a lot during my first pregnancy, and try to do as much as I can during this pregnancy, is nap or rest whenever there is a spare moment. Another sound piece of advice I got was to “nap when baby naps, if you can.” I did. I see a lot of moms out there who are overwhelmed and exhausted. Listen, we have all been there but what I am getting at is how crucial it is that we take care of ourselves by loving, nurturing, and refueling, or else we run on empty all the time and that serves no one at all. During your pregnancy take the time to nurture yourself, so that you transfer that self-care into parenthood.

I hear this all the time: “when are you and your wife going to have a baby”, or “you two would make such beautiful babies”. It’s almost as if everyone wants us to have children – regardless of whether or not we’ve made a decision to do so ourselves.
I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately, and it feels to me that I am – right now –raising my baby. And that baby’s name is “SproutBaby”. I know that this can’t possibly compare to the personal connection, sense of joy, anticipation, excitement, and emotional investment that parents have with their babies. But it is the baby I am raising – and with a level of commitment, anticipation, pride, excitement, apprehension, and passion that I’ve never experienced before.

I know this is a strange title for a blog post, but this actually happened to me in the summer of 1998. It seems just as impossible to me today as it was on the day it occurred. At the same time, it seems totally fateful that this newborn baby found his way onto my doorstep (I should point out that I wasn’t always a big believer in “fate”, but that has changed – most significantly because of the fateful way in which I met my amazing wife.)

ORGANIC OR CONVENTIONAL: WHY FEEDING BABY ORGANIC IS IMPORTANT
by Heather Lahdenpera, L.Ac., M.P.T., MTOM, Dipl. Ac., C.H., O.M.
Having a baby comes with a myriad of choices these days; breast feed or bottle feed, stay at home or work, co-sleep or crib, plastic or wood, conventional or organic, the list goes on and on. Modern life has brought with it many advances and many more choices. Some of the advances we have made have been very beneficial and some have been harmful. In Traditional Oriental Philosophy and Medicine, this is the yin and yang, or balance of the natural world. Every action, every event, every object has its opposite in the world. Each action we choose has an effect on us, our planet and our universe.

On June 11, Representative Carolyn B. Maloney (NY) and Senator Jeff Merkley (OR) introduced the Breastfeeding Promotion Act in both houses of Congress. This is the first time the bill has been introduced in the Senate.
Forty-seven states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands already have enacted various laws protecting breastfeeding mothers, but they are not uniform and most are not comprehensive. Ask your Representative and Senators to co-sponsor the Breastfeeding Promotion Act to provide a unified national policy to keep mothers, their children, and their communities healthy.
